Frequently asked questions

Orders, Shipping & Returns

When will I receive my order?

Orders are typically processed within 3-5 business days since all products are made in small batches. Once shipped, delivery times depend on the carrier and your location, but most U.S. orders arrive within 3-7 business days after shipment.

You’ll receive a tracking number as soon as your order ships.

Where are Shepherd’s Gold products made?

All Shepherd’s Gold products are handmade at Oklahoma in the United States in small batches. We personally render and whip our tallow to ensure freshness, quality, and consistency.

How much product am I actually getting?

The amount listed on the label reflects the actual volume or weight of product you receive, not the container size. We intentionally use slightly larger containers so labels are easy to read and the whipped tallow has room to settle naturally.

What is your return policy?

While we cannot accept returns on cosmetic products, we care deeply about our customers and are always willing to listen. If something isn’t right, please reach out. We’ll do our best to help.

Do you ship internationally?

At this time, we ship within the United States only. We hope to expand shipping options in the future.

What if my order arrives damaged or melted?

Please contact us right away if your order arrives damaged. Tallow may soften or melt during warm weather shipping. This does not affect product quality, but if there’s a problem with your order, we’ll work with you to make it right.

About Tallow & Skin Use

What is tallow, and why is it used for skincare?

Tallow is rendered fat from grass-fed cattle or sheep. It has been used for centuries to protect and nourish skin. Its fatty acid profile closely resembles the natural oils our skin produces, which allows it to absorb easily and support the skin barrier without harsh additives.

What’s the difference between beef tallow and sheep tallow?

Both beef and sheep tallow are rich, nourishing fats with skin-supportive properties, but they differ slightly in composition and skin feel.

Sheep tallow is particularly high in oleic acid, a fatty acid that closely resembles the lipid profile of human sebum. Because of this similarity, many people find sheep tallow especially compatible with the skin, allowing it to absorb easily and support the skin barrier. Its structure closely mirrors the fats naturally present in human skin, which can make it feel exceptionally nourishing.

Beef tallow is the most commonly used form of tallow in skincare and is well known for its stability, neutral feel, and mild scent when properly rendered. It is rich in saturated and monounsaturated fats that help lock in moisture and protect the skin.

We carefully choose our tallow based on fatty-acid profile, purity, and performance, and we render it thoroughly to ensure a clean, gentle product suitable for everyday use.

Is tallow good for your skin?

Yes. Many people find tallow deeply moisturizing, soothing, and supportive of healthy skin. It’s especially loved by those with dry, sensitive, or compromised skin because it contains naturally occurring vitamins A, D, E, and K and does not rely on synthetic fillers.

Can I use tallow on my face?

Absolutely. Tallow is commonly used as a facial moisturizer. We recommend starting with a very small amount on clean, slightly damp skin. Many customers use it morning and evening as their primary moisturizer.

Will tallow clog my pores or cause breakouts?

Pure tallow has a low comedogenic rating (around 2 out of 5), meaning it is unlikely to clog pores for most people. Many acne-prone users report improved balance over time.

In our formulations, we are intentional about every ingredient we include. Any additional oils or ingredients we use are also chosen for their low comedogenic ratings and skin compatibility. That said, every skin type is unique, and we always recommend patch testing when trying a new product.

Is whipped tallow “filled with air” or less effective?

No. Whipped tallow is not diluted or filled with air in a way that reduces its benefits. Whipping simply changes the texture, not the nourishment.

Whipping tallow takes additional time and effort and creates a lighter, creamier consistency that spreads easily and absorbs well. You’re still receiving the full moisturizing and skin-supportive properties of tallow-just in a form that’s easier to apply.

Are your products formulated with science-backed ingredients?

Yes. While we value traditional skincare wisdom, we also rely on scientifically supported ingredients known for skin compatibility and effectiveness. We do not add ingredients simply for trends or marketing.

Every product we offer is something we personally use ourselves. If we wouldn’t put it on our own skin or our family’s skin, we don’t sell it.

Are your products lab tested?

Yes. Every batch of Shepherd’s Gold is independently tested for microbial safety to ensure it meets FDA cosmetic safety guidelines even though it's not required.

Why don’t you share full lab reports?

Lab reports are technical quality-assurance documents. To keep things clear and meaningful for customers, we share an easy-to-understand summary showing how each batch compares to FDA cosmetic safety recommendations.
